The design
Artist Camille Chew's mask design echoes the ornate masks worn in Lunar New Year dragon and lion dances. Foil stamping picks out detail and gives the flat print a three-dimensional read. The first-day ceremony was held at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco.
The series
Each issue presents a paper-cut mask for one of the twelve Chinese Zodiac animals, following the cycle: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat/ram/sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, pig.
The rabbit
Fourth in the zodiac. The Year of the Rabbit opened on January 22, 2023. In the traditional story the rabbit's boastfulness and arrogance become a lesson in humility. People born in a rabbit year are held to be hardworking, ambitious, kind, charismatic and creative, and are said to do well in art, music, architecture and literature.
