The set

Five stamps covering different works, among them Still Life with Crystal Bowl (1972). The issue was dedicated at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.

The work

Lichtenstein's landscapes are the throughline here — experimental, openly indebted to comic art, and unmistakably his. Some are representational, some abstract, and all of them show a painter willing to test what a material could be made to do. He returned to landscape late in life, turning his attention to classical Chinese landscapes rendered in halftone dots.
