The designs
Gregory Manchess painted each snow globe in oil: a snowman, Santa Claus, a deer and a Christmas tree, every one on a different background color. The first-day ceremony was held at the Stephen C. West Ice Arena in Breckenridge.
Where snow globes came from
The earliest examples were made as paperweights and shown at the Paris Universal Expositions of 1878 and 1889. Austrian inventor Erwin Perzy filed the first patent in 1900 and opened the Original Wiener Schneekugelmanufacktur in Vienna. His globes found an international audience, production spread, and themes multiplied — with Christmas scenes becoming the most popular of all.
A small correction
Most people shake them. The people who make them suggest turning the globe upside down instead, waiting for the snow to gather at the top, then righting it — which is how the snowfall was designed to look.
