A fifty-year career
He was born in Meriden, Connecticut on September 15, 1934, trained at Pratt Institute, spent time teaching, and took a master's degree along the way.
Publishing started in 1966 with The Wonderful Dragon of Timlin. What followed was prolific by any measure: over 270 books written and illustrated across five decades, translated widely. Strega Nona and Nana Upstairs & Nana Downstairs are the two most households know.
Recognition kept pace with the output, and in 2011 he received the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal — the award given for a body of work rather than a single title, which in his case was the right measure.
