The set

Ten stamps, each a close-up of a single tulip photographed by Denise Ippolito, with the flower filling nearly the whole frame. The issue was released to mark spring and the standing American affection for tulips.

The first-day ceremony was held at the Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival in Woodburn, Oregon — tulips in bloom, wooden shoes, and Dutch heritage all in one place.

Tulip Time, Holland, Michigan

One of the country's largest tulip festivals runs eight days each spring in Holland, Michigan. It began in 1928 with the import of 100,000 bulbs from the Netherlands; they bloomed the following spring and the festival followed. World War II interrupted it, but it returned in 1946 on a larger scale, and it now includes parades, traditional dance, art installations and concerts, with backing from local radio stations and businesses.

At its height roughly six million tulips line the streets, parks and landmarks — Dutch Village, Windmill Island Gardens, and the Veldheer Tulip Gardens tulip farm among them. More than a million visitors come from around the world in the second week of May.
