The design

Artist Hong Li's graphic treatment of Old Glory, with the word "FREEDOM" set in gray beneath the flag. The issue continues the Postal Service's near-annual practice of putting the American flag on a stamp. There was no official first-day ceremony — all 2023 flag stamps were simply released at Freedom, Maine, on April 10.

A note on the half-mast tradition

The first official policy for flying the flag at half-mast was set by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on March 1, 1954, to honor principal officials and former officials of the U.S. government and the Governors of states, territories and possessions.

The practice has broadened since. In 2020 President Donald Trump ordered flags lowered for Americans who died of COVID-19, framing it as national grief and common cause against what he called an invisible enemy.

Whatever the occasion, a flag at half-mast does one thing reliably: it makes people stop and take note, and reminds them that they stand together as fellow Americans.
