The set

Twelve Forever stamps, each a photograph captioned with the waterfall's name and state. The range is deliberate — from Sunbeam Falls, which few people have heard of, to Niagara, which everyone has. The first-day city was Yellowstone National Park, where one of the twelve falls is located.

Some vocabulary

There are around 17,000 documented waterfalls in the United States, and they are not all the same kind of thing. Height, width, drop distance and sheer force all vary. A cascade is the smaller, stepped sort; a cataract is a single large, powerful drop. Vernal or ephemeral falls run only in spring, when snowmelt supplies water for a few weeks and then stops.

The geologist Oscar von Engeln observed in 1942 that waterfall sites attract and hold public interest — which is still true, and still a good reason to go looking for one.
