The four animals

Deer, fox, rabbit and owl, each shown in its winter habitat, illustrated by Katie Kirk. The set was issued to showcase both the beauty of the season and the animals that get through it.

How they survive the cold

Strategies split. Some species eat heavily through summer and fall and then hibernate; others stay active all winter, relying on thick fur or downy feathers to hold off wind and cold while they keep hunting for food.

Hearing does much of the work. Owls and foxes can locate prey buried under more than three feet of snow. Deer and rabbits use the same sharpness in reverse, hearing predators early enough to run.

A story worth knowing

The Ukrainian folk tale The Mitten imagines the same problem whimsically. In Jan Brett's English retelling, a boy drops a mitten in the snow and animals crawl in one after another for warmth. The mitten stretches as each larger animal squeezes inside — until a field mouse makes the bear sneeze, launching the mitten into the air and scattering everyone across the snow.
