Ansel Adams 2024 Forever Stamps — Sixteen Photographs, Art Collection, First-Class Postage

Sixteen stamps of the American West as Ansel Adams (1902–1984) saw it, in the precise, unmanipulated "straight photography" manner he is identified with. Much of his career was spent arguing, in practice, that photography belonged among the fine arts — and this pane is the evidence. Derry Noyes, a USPS art director, built it from existing prints.

Yosemite

Four images return to the park he is most associated with: Half Dome above the Merced in winter, from 1938; Mirror Lake beneath Mount Watkins in spring, 1935; and the Jeffrey Pine on Sentinel Dome, 1940.

Elsewhere in California

The Sierra supplies a thundercloud over Ellery Lake (1934) and an oak in the foothills at Sunset City (1962). On the coast: the Golden Gate seen from Baker Beach around 1953, fog on a road through Del Monte Forest at Pebble Beach in 1964, and the Oceano dunes in 1963. Add rock and grass at Moraine Lake in Sequoia (1936), and a northern California road just after rain (1960).

Beyond the state line

Alaska gives Denali over Wonder Lake, 1947. Wyoming gives the Tetons above the Snake River, 1942. Arizona supplies Monument Valley in 1958, and Washington a study of leaves in Mount Rainier National Park around 1942.
