Bluegrass Music 2024 Forever Stamps — High Lonesome Sound, First-Class Postage

The stamp borrows its look from vintage bluegrass concert posters. Four acoustic string instruments — guitar, five-string banjo, fiddle and mandolin — sit below the word "Bluegrass," with "High Lonesome Sound" running across the top. That phrase is both the title of a 1963 documentary on Appalachian folk music and a long-standing nickname for the genre itself.

How it was made

Postal Service art director Antonio Alcalá worked with designer and illustrator Heather Moulder, who produced the art as a letterpress print — every layer carved by hand from wood and linoleum.
