The 2024 flag series supplied on a coil, which dispenses one stamp at a time. Booklets of 20 and coils of 100, 3,000 and 10,000 are all part of this issue.
Four times of day
The set works through a single subject at four different hours. Clouds shift shape and color across the designs; the sunlight on the flag does not. Every view is taken from below, tipping the eye up into the sky. The illustrator painted them in gouache on illustration board.
Where the design comes from
On June 14, 1777 the Continental Congress called for 13 horizontal stripes and 13 stars, one of each per original colony. Only once has the stripe count differed — 15 stripes for 15 states between 1795 and 1818 — before the Flag Act of 1818 fixed it at 13 for good and set the rule that each new state adds a star instead.
Twenty-seven versions have followed. The current one arrived with Hawai'i in 1959 and was first flown on July 4, 1960; no earlier design has lasted as long. Flag Day was proclaimed by Woodrow Wilson in 1916 and made official by Congress in 1949.
