U.S. Flags 2024 Forever Stamps — Four Sky Views, Booklet and Coil Formats

The Postal Service's continuing flag series, available in booklets of 20 and in coils of 100, 3,000 and 10,000.

The four designs

The same flag at four different hours of the day. Cloud shapes and colors shift from stamp to stamp, but the sun is on the flag in every one. Each is drawn from a low angle so the eye is pulled upward into the sky. The illustrator painted the designs in gouache on illustration board.

How the flag got its form

The Continental Congress fixed 13 horizontal stripes and 13 stars on June 14, 1777, to honor the original colonies. Thirteen stripes have appeared on every version since, with one exception: from 1795 to 1818 there were 15, for the 15 states then in the Union. The Flag Act of 1818 set the count back to 13 permanently and provided that a star be added for each new state.

Twenty-seven versions have existed as states joined. The current one dates to Hawai'i's admission as the 50th state in 1959, with the 50-star flag first flown on July 4, 1960 — the longest-serving design in the country's history. Woodrow Wilson proclaimed June 14 as Flag Day in 1916; Congress made the designation official in 1949.
