Issued in the run-up to the semiquincentennial — the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution — this pane covers five decisive engagements: Lexington and Concord, Bunker Hill, Trenton, Saratoga and Yorktown.
How the pane is laid out
Each battle gets its own row, and the rows run in chronological order: the two Massachusetts battles of 1775 first, then Trenton, NJ in 1776, Saratoga, NY in 1777, and Yorktown, VA in 1781. Individual stamps carry either a photograph tied to the site or a watercolor of the battle itself.
In the upper right of the pane is a line from Thomas Paine that opens, "These are the times that try men's souls."
