Jimmy Carter 2025 Forever Stamps — Presidential Commemorative, First-Class Postage

Jimmy Carter (1924–2024), 39th President of the United States, reached the White House from small-town Georgia as an outsider — and as the face of a new generation of progressive Southern politicians. His single term opened with real accomplishment and closed in diplomatic and economic difficulty. What followed was longer than the presidency itself: more than thirty years of work on peace, democracy and human rights.

Domestic record

Humility, reconciliation and frugality were recurring notes. He appointed women and minorities to government posts in unusual numbers, convened a presidential commission on mental health, stood up new Cabinet departments, and expanded the National Park System and federally designated wilderness substantially. On the economy he oversaw the deregulation of energy prices and of several industries, air travel most conspicuously.

Abroad

He negotiated the Camp David Accords personally, setting a framework for peace in the Middle East. He signed SALT II with the Soviet Union to cap strategic nuclear arms, and announced formal U.S. recognition of and diplomatic relations with China.

After office

With Emory University he founded The Carter Center, which promotes democracy, observes elections, mediates disputes and works against neglected tropical diseases in the poorest countries. The Nobel Peace Prize came in 2002 — by which point many had already called him the country's finest former president.

The artwork

The stamp reproduces a 1982 oil-on-linen life study by Herbert E. Abrams (1921–2003), painted in preparation for Carter's official White House portrait. Art director Ethel Kessler designed the stamp.
