Reading the flag

Thirteen horizontal stripes alternate across the flag — seven red, six white — one for each colony that declared independence from Great Britain. The 50 stars on the blue canton match the number of states; the 50th was added on July 4, 1960, following Hawai'i's admission in 1959.

Outside government offices, schools, military bases and USPS facilities. Over the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. In a ring around the base of the Washington Monument. Flag Day, first proclaimed by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916, falls on June 14 each year.
