The Year of the Horse stamp centers on a colorful three-dimensional horse mask. It borrows from the heavily ornamented masks worn in the dragon and lion dances that fill Lunar New Year parades, and artist Camille Chew's dimensional approach updates the long folk tradition of paper-cut crafts made at this time of year.
How the mask was built
Chew hand-printed the paper first, then cut, scored and folded it into the form of the mask. Acrylic paint and added paper elements — flowers, tassels — finished the surface, and a layer of papier-mâché backed the whole piece. The completed mask was photographed against white for the series.
