The flower

Chrysanthemums — mums — are the most commercially grown flower in the United States and go by a second name here: Queen of Fall Flowers. Given how widely they are cultivated worldwide, and how much meaning different cultures attach to them, they were a sensible choice for a stamp meant to cross borders.

A long history

Cultivation began in China around the 15th century BC. From there the plant reached Japan and eventually everywhere else; by 1630 more than 500 varieties were recorded. In Japan the chrysanthemum signifies happiness, immortality and the sun, and it is the emblem of the imperial family — hence the Chrysanthemum Throne. In the United States it is mostly a fall decorating staple, available in a wide color range and tolerant of cold that finishes off other flowers.

Not only decorative

Some species are eaten. Certain flowers are dried for tea, and the leaves can be sautéed or added to soups — most commonly in Chinese and Japanese cooking.
