The design
Thirteen alternating red and white stripes represent the original thirteen colonies that declared independence from the United Kingdom and became the first states. Fifty white stars sit in a blue field, one for each state now in the union. The flag — also called the Stars and Stripes, the Star-Spangled Banner and Old Glory — has been redrawn many times over the country's history.
