Please note: this is an $11.95 Priority Mail denominated stamp, not a Forever Stamp.
The Crab Nebula is among the most-observed objects in the sky and one of the brightest supernova remnants visible at night. This Priority Mail stamp carries the James Webb Space Telescope's image of it.
What Webb is showing
A cage-like structure of dust partly encloses a pale blue glow — synchrotron emission, which reads on the image like drifting smoke. The source is the pulsar at the nebula's center: a dead star spinning rapidly with a powerful magnetic field. The blue filaments trace that field, producing the ribboned, smoky effect.
Why it is on a stamp
Webb was built to observe some of the oldest and most distant objects in the universe, and its findings are steadily rewriting what is known about galaxies, exoplanets and star formation — continuing work begun by Hubble and other space telescopes. Putting the image on a stamp puts both the wonder of the object and the engineering behind the photograph into circulation.
