Two galaxies, IC 2163 and NGC 2207, roughly 80 million light-years away, caught in the middle of a collision. Their gravity is pulling both out of shape and setting off bursts of new star formation across each of them.

How the image was assembled

The picture is a composite of separate exposures from the Hubble and James Webb space telescopes, combined using advanced imaging techniques.

Hubble's contribution renders the spiral arms in bright blue, dense with stars, and the two cores in orange. Webb's contribution foregrounds cold dust instead, washing the arms white. Pink marks regions where stars are still buried deep in dust — and some pink areas are not part of these galaxies at all, but objects far behind them, including quasars powered by active supermassive black holes.
