The design

The animal
The brush rabbit (Sylvilagus bachmani) is a small cottontail of the North American West Coast, ranging from Oregon down into Mexico. Adults run 12 to 14.5 inches long and weigh 18 to 32 ounces, dark gray above with a pale gray underbelly and tail and black whiskers.
How they live
The name comes from where they live: dense brush piles and bramble clumps, which conceal an elaborate network of runways they move through. Unlike many rabbits they do not dig burrows of their own. They will occasionally occupy one dug by another animal, and often use none at all.
Their size has been their protection. Rabbits are widely hunted for meat and fur; brush rabbits are generally too small to bother with. Populations are stable and the species is listed as least concern.
