A first
This was the first time the Postal Service used photographs of flowers rather than illustrations.
The four subjects
Freesia, cymbidium orchid, longiflorum lily and Asian hybrid lily — two lilies and two very different blooms, chosen to show how much variation a cut flower can carry. Robert Peak of Winter Park, FL photographed them; the pictures are built around color and the fragility of the petals.
Peak's 25-year career has brought recognition as a photographer, a designer and a filmmaker, with fine art photographs published in major titles and held in collections worldwide. Derry Noyes of Washington, DC designed the stamps.
