The butterfly

The Common Buckeye turns up across most of the United States through the summer, and in autumn large numbers along the East Coast move south.

The eyespots on its wings are the notable feature and they are not decorative — they exist to startle birds that would otherwise eat it, buying the butterfly the fraction of a second it needs.
