Flowers are full of geometry — and the relationship runs both directions, since geometric construction can be used to generate floral designs. The best-known example is the Flower of Life.

The Flower of Life

The symbol is built from 19 overlapping circles of equal size. Where they intersect, small flower shapes emerge, which is where the name comes from. Reduce it to seven circles and it is called the Seed of Life. In Sacred Geometry the figure stands for life and the formation of the universe, and for the proposition that all life is connected.

Where it turns up

It is thousands of years old and remarkably widespread. Archaeologists have found it in the ancient Osireion in Egypt and in a mosaic floor among the ruins of Pompeii. Historians have suggested Leonardo da Vinci's Vitruvian Man was partly inspired by it. It appears under the paw of a lion guarding the Forbidden City in Beijing. In Christianity, the Seed of Life has been associated with the Holy Trinity.
