Angel's trumpets are a summer garden favorite, known for their oversized trumpet-shaped blooms and an unmistakably sweet fragrance.
How the image was made
Photographer Harold Davis lit the flowers from beneath on a light box and merged several exposures into one frame, which is what gives the picture its luminous, semi-transparent quality. He then scanned a sheet of aged paper and dropped it in behind the flowers during post-production.
Davis explains the aim of the technique as capturing the color that passes through a petal rather than the color reflected off it — the reverse of how most flower photography works.
Art director Ethel Kessler built the stamp design around an existing Davis image.
