The design
Dan Cosgrove, long associated with the American Landmarks Series, produced a digital illustration deliberately styled after a vintage travel poster. No formal ceremony was held; the first-day postmark came from Monument Valley itself.
The place
Monument Valley straddles the Utah–Arizona border, and its sandstone buttes rising out of red desert are among the most photographed formations in North America. Millions of years of wind erosion carved them, including the Mitten and Merrick Buttes.
The area is managed as Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, run much as a national park would be, and draws thousands of visitors a year. Artists and photographers keep returning for the same reason everyone else does: the combination of red sand and improbable rock is hard to look away from.
