The design

Dan Cosgrove's digital illustration sets a sunset over sawgrass marsh, with a range of wildlife worked into the scene. Like the other American Landmarks Series stamps, it is built around a place people recognize on sight. Homestead was the First Day City; the stamp was issued without a ceremony.

About the Everglades

The Everglades is a UNESCO-designated wetland that begins near Orlando, takes in Lake Okeechobee, and runs south to Florida Bay. The southern portion falls inside Everglades National Park, which protects a substantial share of what remains of the original ecosystem.

It is the largest tropical wilderness in the continental United States and the third-largest national park there. Threatened and protected species shelter in it, the Florida panther and the American crocodile among them, and its biodiversity brings in more than a million visitors annually.
