The place
Grand Island sits in Lake Superior off Michigan's Upper Peninsula, near Munising, and is ringed by massive sandstone bluffs. They are worth seeing in any season and extraordinary in winter, when lake water works into the crevices and caverns and freezes into curtains of ice and icicles hanging like stalactites.
The artwork
An illustration imagining the view from inside one of these caves, looking west toward a sunset — a scene that never looks the same twice, since the ice reshapes itself all winter. Art director Greg Breeding designed the stamp with original art by Dan Cosgrove.
