The writer

Ursula Kroeber Le Guin (October 21, 1929 – January 22, 2018) worked in more forms than most writers attempt: science fiction, children's books, short stories, poetry, literary criticism, and translation into English.

She was born in Berkeley, California to the author Theodora Kroeber and the anthropologist Alfred Louis Kroeber. With two scholars for parents, all four Kroeber children grew up reading; her own appetite ran to science fiction, fantasy, myth and legend.

The work

She did not begin writing seriously until the late 1950s. A Wizard of Earthsea (1968) was her first major success, followed by The Left Hand of Darkness (1969) — widely regarded as her masterpiece, and the book that won her both the Hugo and the Nebula for best novel, making her the first woman to take both.

What set her apart was a refusal to accept the genre's assumptions. She wrote directly about race, gender and sexuality at a time when little science fiction did, which is precisely what gave the novels their reach beyond genre readers and secured her place among American writers of the first rank.
