Please note: this is a two-ounce rate stamp, not a Forever Stamp. It was issued for wedding invitations and greeting cards that need postage beyond one ounce, with a matching Vintage Rose Forever stamp released for RSVP cards and thank-you notes.

Why a tulip

The tulip is a traditional declaration of devotion. It often pushes up before the last of the winter snow has gone, which is part of why it reads as a messenger of spring.

In ancient Turkey and Persia the tulip stood for perfect love, with different colors marking different registers of feeling — from full romantic attachment down to the cheerful warmth of friendship.

How the stamp was made

Jeanne Greco designed it using drawings from engraved plates by the naturalist artist Maria Sibylla Merian (1647–1717), adding a small dark red heart for a note of color.

Unusually for a modern stamp, it was printed by engraving rather than lithography — appropriate, given the source material.
