The language of flowers
The Victorians turned bouquets into sentences. A carefully chosen arrangement could carry affection, honor, devotion or friendship without a word being said aloud, and the vocabulary was widely enough known to be reliable.
On corsages
Worn at the wrist or pinned to a dress, a corsage marks an occasion or identifies a guest of honor. Proms and weddings are the obvious uses and by no means the only ones — Mother's Day, birthdays and anniversaries all qualify.
There is research behind the instinct. Jeannette Haviland-Jones's work found that receiving flowers produces delight and genuine surprised gratitude across cultures, lifting mood and measurably lowering stress. It is a small gesture with a disproportionate return.
