The design

Harold Davis's digital photography puts orange and yellow sunflowers at the center, with irises, dahlias, echinacea and smaller red, purple, white and pink blooms filling in around them. It is a close relation of the 2022 Tulips Forever design. No official ceremony was held; the first-day postmark came from Lawrence, Kansas, home of Grinter's Sunflower Farm.

Why wild sunflowers

Sunflowers read as summer anywhere in the world, and they come in enough colors and sizes to suit any occasion. The mental image is usually a towering stalk, but North America's native wild sunflowers are often modest — up to about six feet, with flower heads three to four inches across. They grow easily in a backyard and pull in pollinators, butterflies and hummingbirds especially.

That smaller scale is exactly what makes them work in a delicate bouquet, which is what this stamp shows. Combined with other bright blooms, it is a piece of summer you can put on an envelope in any month.
