The design

An abstract rendering of two sailboats on flat water under a blue sky. Libby VanderPloeg worked it up from pencil sketches into Adobe Illustrator, aiming at one specific feeling: being out on the water on a good day. It was released together with the 2023 One Sailboat stamp to cover the postcard rate.

Some background on sail

Sails go back thousands of years — the ancient Egyptians were using simple ones around 4000 BC. The sailboat in its recognizably modern form arrived in the late 1800s. After World War II, hulls shifted from wood to fiberglass, which is largely what turned sailing into a mass recreational pursuit. The Bermuda rig, with its triangular sail plan, became the dominant configuration, and a surprising number of post-war Bermuda-rigged boats are still sailing today — a credit to how they were built and how their owners have kept them.
