The four designs

One barn per season, each a different regional type: a round barn in fall, a gambrel-roofed barn in summer, a forebay (Pennsylvania) barn in spring, and a Western barn in winter. Kim Johnson produced the original artwork, in bright color with sharp detail.

Why barns

Americans slow down for barns. Some are elaborate, some are plainly functional, and some have simply outlasted everything built around them — and all of them produce the same pull toward an earlier, simpler version of the country.

Putting them at the postcard rate makes sense, since barn styles change as you cross the country. It is the right stamp for a card telling someone where you have been. Nondenominated, so like the buildings themselves the stamps stay usable indefinitely.

On vacation or driving through your own county, there is an old barn standing somewhere nearby with a history nobody has written down.
