Postcrossing started in 2005 because a Portuguese student, Paulo Magalhães, noticed that a postcard in the mailbox improved his day. He and community manager Ana Campos launched the site on July 14, 2005, running it off an old personal computer at home.

From one machine to 200 countries

By April 2008 members had traded a million postcards. Today more than 805,000 people across over 200 countries and territories have sent upward of 85 million, with roughly 300,000 in transit at any given moment. U.S. members rank second by volume; Germany sends the most.
