Route 66 2026 Forever Stamps — Centennial Issue, Pane of 16

Route 66 opened on November 11, 1926, running roughly 2,400 miles from Chicago to Los Angeles, and it changed how Americans thought about getting in a car and leaving. A hundred years on, the Postal Service marks the centennial — and the preservation work that keeps the road from disappearing entirely.

Finding the right photographer

Art Director Greg Breeding describes the assignment as daunting until researchers turned up David Schwartz, who had spent more than twenty years photographing the highway. Schwartz supplied the images and, along the way, a good deal of Route 66 history Breeding did not have.

Editorial, not advertising

Breeding was drawn to what he calls the editorial quality of the work — photojournalistic rather than commercial or slick. Nothing on this pane looks styled for a brochure.
