A square invitation weighs less than an ounce and still costs more than a rectangular one. Not because of weight — because of shape.
One designer's client mailed 200 square invitations with $0.78 Love stamps. 45 came back carrying a yellow sticker: postage due, $0.46 non-machinable surcharge. Re-enveloping the entire mailing followed.
Why the machines refuse squares
Sorting equipment orients letters using the long edge. A square has no long edge.
- Aspect ratio above 1.3 — machine-readable, fast, cheap.
- Aspect ratio of 1.0 — the machine cannot orient it, so a person must.
When a human has to handle your mail, that is what the non-machinable surcharge pays for. The rule is in Notice 123, and rate changes that stack on top of it are reviewed by the Postal Regulatory Commission.

If the square is non-negotiable, make the postage part of the design
Build the $1.24 from several stamps instead of one. A worked example:
- Anchor: a surplus Flag Forever stamp, face $0.78, bought at $0.62.
- Accents: vintage 20-cent and 25-cent floral stamps.
- Face value: about $1.23 — covering the rate while costing less than buying it new.
It reads as curated rather than as a surcharge. What it must not be is discount postage from a social media ad: those are counterfeit, and a square invitation that is already getting hand-inspected is the worst possible place to carry forged postage.
Orientation counts too
Even a rectangle becomes non-machinable if the address is written vertically. The address block has to run parallel to the long edge — a calligrapher going for an artistic sideways layout is quietly moving the whole mailing into the surcharge bracket.
