A stationery shop sending about 800 packages a month mailed 200 holiday orders using stamps bought cheaply through a social media seller.
A week later a customer sent a photograph of her envelope under counterfeit seizure tape, having paid $6.00 at the counter to collect it. Her message ended: is this a scam?
Four words that no refund fully undoes. The stamp had cost 35 cents.
The aesthetic problem, and the real solution
For a boutique seller the stamp is part of the product. A generic Flag on a hand-decorated envelope breaks the effect the whole brand rests on.
But current art issues cost $0.78. On a $12 sticker pack, $0.78 of postage plus $0.50 for the mailer is around 10% of revenue before anything else is counted.
The workable answer is legacy art stamps — 2018–2022 animal and floral issues from verified surplus sellers at about $0.62. Same hand-picked look, closer to a bulk coil price. That single substitution saves roughly $240 a month at this volume.

How to check a delivery in three steps
When a surplus order arrives, before anything goes in the dispenser:
- Is the coil still in its official paper band? Loose stamps in a bag are not a coil.
- Are the plate number markings present and correctly formed? Genuine coils carry them at intervals; forgeries usually get this wrong or omit it.
- How does it feel? Real stamps have texture from the printing process. Counterfeits feel like glossy stickers.
Price is the fourth check and the bluntest: anything starting with a 3 is fake. Genuine wholesale postage rarely goes below about 55 cents, because there is no supply chain that produces it more cheaply.

For items over $100, buy retail and stop thinking about it — $0.16 is not worth any residual doubt on a high-value order. And keep a booklet in the drawer so a 3 AM stock-out never turns into a decision made in a hurry.
The other failure: guessing at weight
A card and two stickers is one ounce. A card, two stickers and a rigid backing board to stop bending is 1.1 oz — and the limit for one stamp is 1.0 oz. Fifty orders came back for $0.26 in additional postage.
Weigh every configuration, then apply the right rate:
- Up to 1.0 oz — one Forever stamp, $0.78 in value
- 1.1 to 2.0 oz — one two-ounce stamp, about $1.04
Note the trap on the second line: two Forever stamps come to $1.56 and do the same job as a $1.04 two-ounce stamp. Solving an underpayment by adding a second Forever stamp wastes $0.52 on every piece.
Buying ahead of the increase
With a rate near $0.82 expected, buying 3,000 legacy art stamps at $0.62 covers the holiday season at a price the market will have left behind — which is what makes free shipping affordable while competitors are adding a postage line.
