Media Mail Closes First: The Holiday Deadline Nobody Watches

Media Mail Closes First: The Holiday Deadline Nobody Watches
Wedding Roses Stamps

Everyone knows the First-Class holiday deadline. Fewer people know that the cheap services close earlier, which is exactly backwards from how most people plan.

Service Domestic International
Media Mail 12 December
Retail Ground 14 December
First-Class Mail 15 December 1 December
Priority Mail 17 December 4 December
Priority Mail Express 21 December 8 December

If you are posting books as gifts — the classic Media Mail use — your deadline is the first one on the list, nearly ten days before Express. And every international deadline lands two weeks before its domestic equivalent.

What each service costs

Service Covers Weight limit From
First-Class Mail Postcards and letters 3.5 oz $0.73
First-Class Package Small parcels 15.999 oz $4.00
Priority Mail Packages, large envelopes 70 lbs $7.95
Priority Mail Express Fast documents and packages 70 lbs $26.35
Media Mail Books, CDs, DVDs 70 lbs $2.89

Media Mail is dramatically cheaper than any parcel service and is restricted to genuine media — books, recordings, printed music. It is slower by design, which is why its deadline comes first.

Best deals on Forever stamps

Seasonal designs run out well before December. Wreaths, snowmen, winter landscapes, gingerbread and lights all appear each year in limited runs, and the surplus market for previous years' designs is often the only place to find a specific one after November.

Buy the design you want in October. Buy the postage you need whenever — Forever stamps do not expire, so there is no timing risk on the value, only on the artwork.

Supplies that prevent problems

  • Envelopes. #10 for letters, A7 for cards. Choose 24 lb stock — lighter envelopes tear in sorting and arrive looking mishandled.
  • Closures. Peel-and-seal or gummed. Self-adhesive flaps on cheap stock lift in humidity, which is how cards arrive open.
  • Paper. Acid-free if you expect the card to be kept. Many are.
  • Ink. Waterproof and fade-resistant. Gel and fountain pens both work; the failure mode is water-soluble ink meeting a wet mailbox.

Buying without getting caught

  • Treat very low prices as disqualifying, not as a bargain to investigate.
  • Avoid resale and classified platforms for postage specifically — this is where counterfeits concentrate.
  • Check the seller independently before ordering, not after.

Where to buy

The USPS official store for current seasonal issues, or a verified surplus channel such as Forever Stamp Center for earlier designs and volume.

The short version

Work backwards from the earliest deadline that applies to you, not the latest. Media Mail closes on the 12th, international First-Class on the 1st, and buying the stamps in October is the only part of this you can do early.
