Three hundred gold-foiled, wax-sealed invitations went out to guests in Europe, Asia and the Middle East, with vintage US stamps chosen for their looks.
Three weeks later a guest in London had to pay £2.50 to collect her own wedding invitation. It was under-franked. Then the same calls came from Italy, and from Brazil.
The aesthetic decision had been made carefully. The classification rules had not been read at all.
What the Global Forever stamp does
One round stamp at about $1.65 covers a one-ounce letter to nearly anywhere. It is the simplest correct answer, and clients routinely reject it for being round and not matching the suite.
If it has to be built from rectangular stamps, do the arithmetic explicitly:
- Two standard Forever stamps at $0.78 = $1.56
- Shortfall: $0.09
- Add a 10-cent stamp → $1.66 total
Overpaying by a cent is the cheapest insurance in the process. Under-franking by a cent transfers the cost, plus a collection fee, to your guest.

The lumpy-envelope problem at the counter
A letter carrying documents needs no customs form. A letter a clerk judges to contain merchandise does — and a wax seal, a ribbon or a rigid insert is what triggers that judgement.
Arriving with 200 invitations and being told they need 200 customs forms is a bad afternoon that could have been designed out months earlier.
The rule: keep the outer envelope flat. Put the wax seal on the inner envelope, where it is still the first thing the guest sees when they open it. That keeps the piece travelling as a letter at $1.65 rather than as a package at $18.00 and up.
Sourcing the components
| Stamp | Source | Approach |
|---|---|---|
| Global Forever | USPS official | Keep two sheets for emergencies |
| Domestic Flags, base layer | Verified surplus | Buy coils; this carries most of the value |
| Vintage cent-value fillers | Vetted collector liquidators | Unused sheets of 3-, 4- and 10-cent |
| "Discount" Global stamps | Nowhere | Global stamps are never deeply discounted — the offer is the tell |
Check international service alerts before applying postage: if service to a destination is suspended, you want to know before the stamps are on the envelope. Cross-border carriage rules sit with the Universal Postal Union, and thickness and classification detail is in Notice 123.
Where to buy
The USPS official store for Global Forever, or a verified surplus channel such as Forever Stamp Center for the base stamps in an array.
The short version
Flat outer envelope, seal on the inner, postage built to a cent over the rate, and a look at the service alerts before anything is stamped. A beautiful envelope that arrives postage-due is an expensive apology.
