Wedding invitations are the most expensive mail most people will ever send, and the most likely to come back. The reason is almost always the same, and it has nothing to do with weight.
Square envelopes are not machineable
This is the trap, and it catches beautiful stationery specifically.
USPS automation is built for rectangular mail within set proportions. A square envelope cannot run through it, which puts the piece into the non-machineable category and triggers a surcharge.
Put a standard Forever stamp on a square invitation and it is short-paid. It will be returned — not delivered late, returned — and you will find out when the envelopes come back in a box.
