Postage has a fixed face value, so any genuine discount has to come from somewhere specific. It is worth knowing where, because that is also how you spot the offers that come from nowhere.
Two legitimate sources
Retail overhead you are not paying for. Buying in person carries the cost of the shop — premises, staff, stocking. Online sellers carry less of that, which is why online pricing can sit slightly below the counter.
Secondary supply. Overstock and business liquidations put genuine stamps back on the market below face. This is the larger of the two effects and the reason a real discount exists at all.

The two Forever types
Only two, and they are easy to tell apart:
- FOREVER — domestic, currently $0.60, covers a US letter up to 1 oz.
- GLOBAL FOREVER — international, currently $1.40, covers a 1 oz letter to almost anywhere in the world.
Both are non-denominated: the value tracks the rate rather than being printed on the stamp, so neither ever needs topping up.
Alongside them sit commemoratives — issued for a person or event, printed in small runs, on sale for a short period, and collectible afterwards.
An honest note on collecting
Standard Forever stamps have little collectible value. They are printed in enormous quantities precisely because they are the everyday stamp.
That is not a criticism — it is what makes them useful. Buy Forever stamps to send mail; buy commemoratives if you want something to keep.
Rolls, and what they actually cost
Coils run from 20 stamps up to 10,000 — at the current rate, $12 to $6,000.
A roll does not lower the per-stamp price at a post office; face value is face value. What it saves is trips and interruptions, which for anyone mailing regularly is the larger cost.
Where a roll does reduce the unit price is through a surplus channel, where volume is what the discount is priced against.
Buying in person versus online
In person — post offices, kiosks, convenience stores, supermarkets, warehouse clubs, and carriers on rural routes. You leave with the stamps and there is no authenticity question. You pay face value.
Online — the official store at face value with the full catalogue; large retailers at or near face; verified surplus dealers below face. The trade-off is that you are trusting the seller, which makes choosing the channel the whole decision.

The realistic target is a modest discount from a seller who can tell you where the stock came from. If a price is far below what overstock and liquidation could support, the explanation is not a better supply chain.
